Pine nuts: The most expensive Mediterranean seeds

Pine nuts: The most expensive Mediterranean seeds

Edible pine seeds, one of the most expensive nuts on the market, are blessed with a unique taste and a peculiar way of reaching supermarket shelves.

A hidden treasure of vigorous pine

This snack of unique flavor and interesting nutritive value is growing in popularity. We adore it raw, fried, or in dips such as pesto. However, not many of us know what it takes to have a small amount of pine nuts in a bowl.

Pine seeds ripen during the Indian summer and early fall. Hidden inside a strong pinecone that sometimes takes up to twenty days to open, they are hard to get in every way one could think of. Only at this point is it possible to collect the tasty seeds and use them. Furthermore, seeds have to be of proper size, and guess what – they are found in only eighteen types of pines. Pretty exotic, right?

Fried pine nuts are commonly added to salads. You can see how they taste if you order the Beefsteak Salad we offer from 12 PM to 5 PM as part of our Lunch Menu – Salad Story. Even though they are known to be saturated with calories, you don’t have to fret about your body weight; pine nuts are known to help reduce hunger due to the fatty acids that cause large number of hormones to break free, making you feel full.

Besides being rich in vitamins and antioxidants, they are known to slow aging. This is something even people allergic to gluten will benefit from as pine nuts are completely safe to consume. We mix them not only with beefsteak, but also with delicious smoked swordfish by adding them to the carpaccio that we serve as a starter.
